Cage: The Bots “Cannot Reflect the Human Condition”

While Nicholas Cage was primarily addressing monstrosities he comes across in his line of work, I wish people would heed his advice and also refrain from using the abominable gimmick called ‘AI-generated art,’ which is not only ethically problematic and legally actionable but also, at the same time, an inherently ugly thing. It harms not only all the concerned parties but also the beholder himself: it putrefies his spirit and may affect his taste, further lowering society’s bar for art. And nothing sums it up better than this sentence: ‘Robots cannot reflect the human condition for us,’ which is reason enough to reject it. Sometimes people casually post the abominable AI-generated ‘art’ online without even flagging or labeling it. I believe we should not normalize the ugly and derivative imagery that continues to poison the visual realm around us.
